Overview
SCUA’s modern factory is equipped with the latest CNC lathes and multi-axis CNC machining centers used in the manufacture of a range of components for mining and other industries. In-house designed and manufactured components include moils, pneumatic ladle cleaners and also most of the components for our own Dust Suppression and Material Flow systems.
It is not uncommon to find that imported mining equipment and machinery do not withstand the rigors of the South African mining industry. Some components tend to fail well inside the expected MTBF operational window, leading to unnecessary, costly productions stoppages. SCUA has the skilled staff and equipment to design and manufacture robust replacement parts, often at a better lead time and cost than importing the component from overseas.

CNC Machines
Our CNC machining centers have full 4-axis capabilities. The typical part size that can be accommodated is approximately 900mm x 600mm x 500mm high and the respective CNC controllers are driven via the latest CAM software. Our CNC lathes have a capacity of 1000mm between centers with a 400mm swing. A number of the moils SCUA manufactures are in excess of 1000mm in length and for these cases we also have a number of manual lathes capable of handling lengths of up to 3000mm combined with a swing of 500mm.

Case Study
A typical challenge presented to SCUA was a request to manufacture a high-precision, auto-clamping, auto-indexing jig or fixture to be incorporated into a purpose-built CNC drilling machine used for the final machining of oil sumps for Volkswagen passenger vehicle engines. This challenge was made no less interesting by the fact that the actual production machine was being built in Taiwan and all drawings supplied to SCUA was in Chinese!
The automotive application meant that the fixture had to be manufactured to very tight tolerances and had to be robust enough to consistently produce quality components in a high volume production environment.
What started of as a 100 kilogram flame-cut mild steel plate turned into a production quality fixture with six automatic hydraulic clamps and a sophisticated pneumatic fail-safe that would not allow the CNC machine to start unless the job was properly located in the fixture
The final product had over 150 parts with 300 precision holes to accommodate the complex hydraulics. SCUA was supplied with the CNC indexing heads and was responsible for the base plate structure as well as the fixture with all its hydraulic and pneumatic components.
